Reading requirements
At Fruitport Middle School, students are expected to read every night for at least 20 minutes. They do not have to keep a reading log. Instead, they show they are doing their reading by FINISHING books. Our goal is for students to read lots of books, but we expect the average student to read at least 4 books per marking period at their level (16 each year) to be "On Target." Students who go "Above and Beyond" for our reading requirements have a goal of reading 5 or more books each marking period. Our book reviews are due every two weeks on our library day. When they finish a book, they write a review on Bookopolis to earn credit for completing a book. Students will have a grade in the grade book to show their progress towards this goal. Their grade for the review is based on a rubric. Students may use this template to make sure they have all the parts.

When you start a book:
- Add the book to your "bookshelf" on Biblionasium.
- Calculate your reading rate using this online tool, and set a goal for how long it will take you to finish the book. Add this goal date to our class calendar (in class poster)
As you Read:
- Look for words that are unfamiliar to you. When you find one, jot it down so you can add it to your “Word Work” folder. When you’re in class, put the word in the word jar for your class.
- “Talk back to the book” by jotting what you are thinking on a sticky note.
- Mark favorite passages
- Mark places where you are confused
- If you struggle to remember what you read, write a short summary at the end of the chapter.
- pay attention to how the character is changing...this will help you figure out the theme.
- Write a review on Bookopolis. Your book review should be at least 4 sentences. Make sure to include 1) a hook, 2) summary 3) A rating and why, 4) the genre, title and author and 5) one of the themes of the book with an example. (Example: Do you have best friends that you share everything with? Do your friends feel so close they are like sisters? I rate Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with 4.5 stars because it is a heart-warming realistic fiction novel that will have you laughing and crying as you follow Carmen, Tibby, Bridget & Lena as they each go their separate ways for the summer. This book teaches you that no one’s life is perfect and we all have to try to be the best version we can of ourselves. Carmen realized this as she learned to accept how her family was changing.)
- Recommend it to a friend.
- Volunteer to give a book talk about it to the class.
